Two decades (!) after Into the Rush introduced Aly & AJ as not only actresses but also talented musicians, the sisters returned to Phoenix for a Celebrity Theatre show that delivered comfort, nostalgia, and curiosity for what comes next.
The duo opened with a handful of songs from Silver Deliverer, easing into their set with their newest, most folk-tinged music yet. The mood? Peaceful. Their contentment? Visible. The harmonies? Everything you’d hope for, especially when backed by a full live band. It was a testament to how far they’ve come musically, making space for the present before diving into the past.
And the classics didn’t disappoint: “Chemicals React” had the crowd singing every word as the sisters rocked out on stage. “Rush,” on the other hand, was reimagined as a down-tempo, introspective version, and “Hold Out” and “No One” were blended as a mashup.
Before performing “Sirens,” Aly shared a sobering story from 2022, when their tour bus was caught in the crossfire of a mass shooting. Judging by the reactions of the fans, this wasn’t a well-known story, so the sisters had their attention. They’re partnering with Everytown for Gun Safety on this tour, using their platform to raise money and awareness for gun reform, and they shared the number to text to donate to the cause.
To end the night on a high note, Aly & AJ pulled the ever-popular “Potential Breakup Song” from the vault, and there was a sense that in the room, we’ve really all grown up together. Life keeps offering its surprises, delights, and challenges, but, as the sisters reminded us, it’s all worth it.
