The Arizona metalcore community descended on Tempe’s Marquee Theatre this week to mosh and crowdsurf to their heart’s content for The Plot in You. The hardcore heavyweight group was joined by Holding Absence, Boundaries and Acres for a sweaty, rowdy show.
New England metal group Boundaries injected their own unique character into their opening set with blistering vocals and brutal breakdowns. The crowd was ready to go, throwing themselves at the barricade and screaming all the words to “Darkness Shared”, “Inhale the Grief” and more. Their set was a sprint to the finish and kept the audience warmed up for the rest of the night.
Holding Absence- one of Europe’s current best musical exports- was the “light” band on the lineup but their incredible energy and anthemic sound had just as many fans crowdsurfing towards the stage for a chance to clasp singer Lucas Woodland’s hand. The quartet mixes rock and metalcore elements for a sound that encourages both passionate singing along and opening up the pit. Their time onstage didn’t feel nearly long enough and fans clamored for more as the band exited with a bow.
It’s been 15 years of The Plot in You and the band has really come into their own on this tour- with high level production, dizzying stage lights and a way of making all of it look easy. The band leaned into the theatrical side of metalcore with their carpeted stage, whirling backdrop and plethora of red and green lights on top of vocalist Landon Tewers’ guttural performance. The crowd summoned all of their energy to keep the pit alive and the crowd surfing consistent so the band returned the favor by giving their all right back to the fans. With temps heating up in Phoenix, audiences are back and ready to sweat- and The Plot in You left it all out on the floor with this incredible stop.
