A different kind of summer camp set up shop at Marquee Theatre this week as the Camp Screamo Tour brought Story of the Year, Silverstein and more to the desert. The alt rock scene staples were joined by Origami Angel for a rowdy night of crowd surfing and classic tunes that put bodies in motion from start to finish.
Origami Angel makes a surprising amount of noise for just two people and they are fan favorites every time they visit Arizona. Their opening slot on this tour drew a solid early crowd and the pit opened for the first (and definitely not the last) time to the likes of “#GAMIGANG”, “Escape Rope” and more.
The Canadian rockers in Silverstein had an hour to warm up the audience for the headliner and they took every second to get the room moving. Bodies went flying over the barricade during every song, with a few lucky fans joyfully high-fiving the band as they reached the front of the room. Singer Shane Told prowled across the stage, showcasing impressive vocals during “I Am the Arsonist”, “Massachusetts” and more across their 15-song set, flanked by the rest of the band all dressed in matching camp shirts to match the tour’s theme.
A cheeky game of “Silverstein Says” got the pit moving again before fans went wild at the first notes of “My Heroine”- and their voices filled the room as the band dropped back to let the crowd take over for one of the most emotional moments of the show. Their time concluded with “Smile in Your Sleep” and “Bleeds No More” as an exhausted room rallied their energy for one more performance.
With well over two decades in the game, Story of Year arrived in Arizona with the force and confidence of a veteran band that fully understands their fans. Those fans gave them everything they had left for a headlining performance that once again had security catching a steady stream of crowd surfers right when “And the Hero Will Drown” dropped in. The stage was bathed in the effects from the CO₂ jet cannons lining the front and adding to the stellar production of the show.
Despite the late hour, the theatre remained full and very steamy in the scorching Arizona heat- something the crowd battled through to enjoy every moment of “2005”, “War” and “Choose Your Fate”. Eventually the set came to a close on “Until the Day I Die”, rounding out a successful talent show at Camp Screamo.
