Show Review: Metric puts Phoenix fans in their feelings at Arizona Financial Theatre

Canadian indie rock band Metric pulled Phoenix into a swirl of emotions when their All the Feelings Tour visited Arizona Financial Theatre last week. The legendary foursome brought some friends along for the ride, with Broken Social Scene and Stars rounding out the lineup for an evening of flashing lights, familiar songs and unbreakable friendship.

Broken Social Scene’s career has paralleled Metric’s (and overlapped in many places) and the two longtime friends were clearly thrilled to be sharing the stage on this tour. The fans welcomed them with the same love, cheering wildly as singer Kevin Drew apologized for taking so long to return to Arizona. The set from there was pure joy radiating from both sides of the barricade and heating up the room in anticipation for Metric’s performance.

A wall of light blinded the crowd as Metric took the stage, opening with “Victim of Luck” and “Oh Please”. The band’s energy- and Emily Haines’ otherworldly vocals- has not changed in nearly three decades and their fans celebrated all of that at once on Wednesday night. Metric was a whirlwind of movement, with Haines’ tambourine flashing as she moved between facing her eager crowd and adding another layer of instrumentation to the set behind her keyboard.

After more fan favorite tracks like “Leave You On a High” and “Gold Guns Girls”, Broken Social Scene reappeared to complete the collective onstage for a jam band performance of “Loyal”. The bands were certainly in their feelings, feeding off the experience and the happiness emanating from the pit. Metric delivered nearly two hours of incredible music, returning for a highly demanded encore of “Help I’m Alive” and the smash indie hit “Black Sheep” to close out a jubilant celebration of their storied career and the brightness of their future ahead.
