Phoenix’s Walter Studios transformed into The Aces’ own Studio 54 when their Gold Star Baby Tour visited Arizona last week. The quartet brought Lydia Night with them to round out a show that was pure girl power from start to finish.
Lydia Night is venturing out on a solo journey after the dissolution of The Regrettes and putting her own lipstick mark on the alternative scene. Her music may be bubbly and bouncy with the beats but the lyrics speak to a brand of feminine rage that clearly resonated with an eclectic crowd of all ages, genders and sexualities. Knight kept her foot firmly on the necks of men throughout her set, especially on songs like “You Sir” and “The Bomb”. Fans were thrilled to see Night back onstage with her own music and even cheered for an encore at the end of her opening set.
The Aces took the stage like the headlining band at a 70s discotheque, launching into “Jealous” and “Twin Flame”. Singer Cristal Ramirez summoned the band’s horde of lesbian fans to the dancefloor where they were more than happy to throw up their hands and groove to The Aces’ pop rock performance. Early in the set, the band chose their own Gold Star Baby for the night out of a crowd of fashionably dressed fans, inviting the lucky winner onstage to take a shot and celebrate one of the last shows of the tour. After over 20 rousing tracks, the Friday night party came to an end and the Gold Star Baby club shuttered for business until the band’s next visit to Phoenix.
