Salt Lake City’s own Dogma Society has returned with their latest single- the first from an upcoming EP release. The multi-genre collective carved their own niche in the Utah DIY scene and is now ready to continue building their stellar discography and devoted fanbase with “GET AWAY”, an indie-inspired track with elements of rock, hip hop and more. Atlas is thrilled to premiere the song and video and we spoke to the group about how this track came together, how the band has grown since we last spoke and their summer touring plans!
Atlas Artist Group: Hello! Not sure if you’ll remember this but we did a similar email interview two years ago when “Horns” came out and we’re really excited to feature you all again. It’s been a crazy few years- what’s changed for you as a group? How do you view this project’s growth from “Horns” to now the premiere of “GET AWAY”?
Dogma Society: Yes of course we do! Also, thank you for this opportunity. It definitely has been a crazy few years. We took some time to ourselves individually for a little while. We needed a break for a bit but now that we’re back, we feel more creative and driven than ever before.
This project reflects everything we’ve grown to become in the last two years. We took a lot of time to really focus on the production, songwriting, and substance. This is our best work so far and I think that is because of the time we had to live and experience. We love to make whatever we’re feeling in the moment. When we made “Horns” we were still figuring out what direction we wanted to go. The influence was different, the mind space was different. This current sound is us knowing what we’re doing.
Atlas: With the EP coming out later this year, what made you decide that “GET AWAY” would be the first single? What’s the story behind this particular track? Is this a good indication of the direction of the music or will the EP itself be more eclectic?
Dogma Society: This track came as naturally as it could. Sonny played the chords and the rest instantly fell into place. Just like “Horns”. We wanted to make something fast, but not aggressive and of course, keep the melodies strong. The demo became the final version, except for the mix. Once we had the demo, we couldn’t stop replaying it and that’s usually how we know what the single will be. That feeling only comes with certain songs.
This is definitely a good indication of the EP’s direction. Now that we feel our sound is more established, it was easier to make things sound more consistent. We still always do our best to make songs that are out of our comfortable range. We never want to box ourselves into one sound or genre.
Atlas: You guys have really stuck to the DIY/indie ethos with this project- what does that particular genre/scene mean to you and how has the response been from listeners over the years?
Dogma Society: It means everything to us because we’ve had to do everything ourselves. If we wanted something, we had to figure out how to make it happen. It’s not an aesthetic we try to embody. That’s naturally how things have become. Why change that if it has worked out for us? When people get involved and try to direct our creativity, the turnout isn’t as strong as it should be so we just decide to do it ourselves. But that doesn’t mean we’re opposed to becoming mainstream or taking opportunities. At the end of the day, we want to be a household name so whether we have to make that happen ourselves or with help from outsiders, we’ll do whatever makes the most sense.
The response from listeners has been amazing. They appreciate the rawness and we hope it helps them go out and make their dreams happen no matter the circumstance. You’re your biggest fan and supporter.
Atlas: With so much great music released in the last few years, is there anything out that’s really captured your attention and maybe even bled its way into the music you’re making? Since the start of Dogma Society to today, what do you find is your biggest inspiration when it comes to your creative process?
Dogma Society: As always, life experience is our biggest inspiration. Our surroundings, upbringing, love and emotion. We have just learned how to channel everything even more than before.
Atlas: Any live show plans or tours in the works with the EP on the horizon? What else is coming up for you guys?
Dogma Society: Hopefully a summer tour! We have a few in the works currently. But we’re really excited to play our EP release show this June 21st in our hometown Salt Lake City. Music and touring is our main focus and priority so we’ll be staying in the studio and on the road.
Atlas: Thank you as always for your time and we’re so stoked for the new song and the new EP!
Dogma Society: Much love guys! Thank you again. We really appreciate you taking the time to cover us and push us. We will definitely be talking another time!!
