Lollapalooza Berlin: Seventeen becomes first K-POP group to headline Germany’s premier event

A weekend of amazing music concluded with day two of Lollapalooza Berlin at Olympiastadion Berlin on Sunday. This second day was even more special, with K-pop group Seventeen headlining Main Stage South and drawing Carats from all over the world to see their set. Alongside Seventeen, acts like Cro, Sam Smith and Niall Horan rounded out a spectacular lineup and there was something for everyone under the hot afternoon sun.

Once again, Atlas was in the pit with all the fans- check out our favorite moments from Sunday!

Alternative Artists Heat Up the Day

The Alternative Stage boasted so many gems that it was easy to see why so many fans flocked in that direction. One of the first artists of the day, Cloudy June, brought a heavy dose of sunshine to the stage and her diehard fans clamored for more at the barricade. The indie pop singer spoke in both German and English between songs and had everyone in the crowd grooving along to “Crazy Woman”, “Mommy Issues” and even a few unreleased tracks. It was a perfect dance party to get the afternoon started and attendees walked away with more pep in their step for the rest of the fest.

The crowd at Main Stage South was packed tight for Seventeen’s set later in the evening but they had plenty of love for the other acts playing. One such band was English rockers Nothing But Thieves and they took the stage squinting into the sun for a rousing set. They demanded (in their polite, British way) that the audience jump and dance with them and definitely gave them a beat to work with on “Futureproof” and “Welcome to the DCC”. They also incorporated their favorite cover- Pixies’ “Where Is My Mind?”- before properly rocking out with “Amsterdam” and “Overcome” to close things out.

With enough room for indie pop and rock ‘n’ roll, attendees spent their afternoon bouncing between stages for a little dose of everything before the sun set into the headliners.

Seventeen Gets Lollapalooza to Rock with Them

Twelve of 13 members of K-pop powerhouse group Seventeen made the journey all the way to Germany to headline Main Stage South for thousands of Carats- many of whom had waited years for this very moment. The group was given an extended set to show off their incredible talents both as a group, units and individuals. Fans spotted the members sidestage as the production came together, shattering the late afternoon air with their shrieks.

The members took their places- live band in tow- to kick off a lengthy performance with “Super” and “Don Quixote”. Carats waved flags, signs and lightsticks to express their enthusiasm and the love the fans have for this group transcends normal fandom. The group, for their part, were so visibly excited to be onstage for European Carats and gave their all and more to the performance. Vernon and Joshua translated for the other members onstage as they all took moments between songs to speak to the fans and express what this performance meant to them as a whole.

They packed nearly 20 songs into their timeslot, including very special unit performances that deserved their own spotlight. BSS made an appearance for “Fighting”- with a fleet of backup dancers- before the other units ran through “Cheers to Youth”, the mesmerizing choreography of “Spell”, the heat of “Fire” and a full group performance of “Cheers”.

Already more than halfway through what was turning into a perfect setlist, the group didn’t slow down for a minute. They got everyone to “Clap” before heading right into “Maestro” and the song’s intricate footwork that got the fans cheering with each step.

As this was Jeonghan’s final show before his military enlistment, he was front and center but never drew the spotlight away from the other members. The group and the fans sent him love throughout the set and his soft smile appeared during “Headliner” and “Together” as he savored his last show with the group.

It wouldn’t be a Seventeen show without ending on an “Aju Nice” and the group probably confused non-Carats with their endless performance- last count put the group at over seven choruses before exiting the stage.

Fans had sweated it out all day for this chance to see the prolific boy group and they delivered one of the finest sets of the entire day with their energy and warmth. It was a stunning conclusion to Main Stage South’s lineup and the audience went home thrilled that they had witnessed such a special set to mark the end of an era for the group.

This was our conclusion to Lollapalooza Berlin as well and was a feather in the cap of a stunning weekend. Fans were well taken care of by the staff and everyone seemed to have a very positive experience at Olympiastadion Berlin. We certainly can’t wait to be back in Germany next year for the big tenth anniversary celebration!
