Throwbacks are a quintessential part of every summer playlist, and no one knows it better than the artists who get back in the saddle for a victory lap, performing for multiple generations of fans all summer long. Such is the case for New Kids on the Block, Paula Abdul, and DJ Jazzy Jeff on the Magic Summer Tour that brought neon nostalgia to Phoenix’s Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre on Tuesday night.
To answer any lingering questions: Yes, these artists still have it. Paula Abdul alternated between esteemed dancer whose choreography is the stuff of legends and dance instructor lording over “auditions” and leading her troupe through her signature moves. She’s having a blast out on the road again. “This is 62, folks!” she said, grinning.
And for the headlining set, NKOTB reminded us all that they and their peers walked so the boy bands of the moment could run. They danced, they traded solo moments, and they worked the crowd, most of whom sported shockingly bright lycra and at least one of the group’s member’s names emblazoned across the chest. (Writer’s note: Donnie was a clear favorite, based on fan shirts.)
It may seem like the goal of this tour is to relive the glory days, but the joy emanating from the artists and the fans alike suggests something different is happening: appreciating where we are right now. It’s just plain fun to get together and dance, even in the sweltering heat. And that is the magic of the Magic Summer Tour.
