It’s a treat to welcome Beach Weather home to Phoenix and the fans turned up in sold out fashion to Crescent Ballroom this week. Pineapple Sunrise: The Tour was supported by Almost Monday for a splash of sunshine as Arizona emerges from the winter chill.
Almost Monday is a Phoenix favorite and there were plenty of fans who arrived early to catch their set. The San Diego band opened with their viral hit “Only Wanna Dance” and the party was off and running. Singer Dawson Daugherty spoke bashfully between songs but the band let the music do most of the talking. Their stellar covers of Franz Ferdinand’s “Take Me Out” and The Romantics’ “What I Like About You” brought an element of familiarity to those who hadn’t heard Almost Monday before and their sunny SoCal energy warmed the room. They closed their set with “Cough Drops” and “Life Goes By” and kept the crowd moving and ready for the headliner.
Beach Weather took the stage with “Chit Chat”- an iconic opening for a band that’s experiencing a well-deserved surge in listeners. The stage was a time capsule of 1970’s decor, complete with neon signage and palm trees while the band kept that aesthetic going with their outfits as well. Singer Nick Santino handed the mic over to the audience on several occasions, grinning as the fans took over the vocals on “Bad Seed” and “Tremors”.
Crescent Ballroom was bathed in warm light to match the stage layout and the night came to a reluctant close with fan-favorite “Trouble With This Bed”, “Swoon” and their own viral hit “Sex, Drugs, Etc.” As always, seeing Beach Weather at home is a joy and the band reciprocated that love with their profoundly energetic set- Phoenix already misses these guys and can’t wait to see them again.
