Show Review: Sun Room brings warm Southern California energy to The Van Buren

Nothing melts the winter chill like a large dose of California sunshine and surf rock band Sun Room brought a little piece of San Diego to The Van Buren this week. The quartet got the venue dancing and working up a sweat even against the late fall temperatures.

After a successful tour with Louis Tomlinson last year, Sun Room’s trajectory has only been upwards, graduating from smaller clubs to venues like The Van Buren. To their credit, their charisma and production merit the jump and fans crowded the barricade to shout along to their favorite tracks.

The quartet emerged from heavy fog dressed to the nines for an appreciative crowd. Launching the set with “Something That You’re Missing” into “Outta Their Minds” had the fans jumping and pockets of attendees were spotted busting a move in their own circles towards the back.

Sun Room has planted themselves and their music firmly in the beaches of Southern California and their set was almost an homage to the surf and sand. The crowd was there for the pure enjoyment of it all and only raised their phones a slight handful of times throughout the set- instead preferring to throw up their hands and let loose.

After a lengthy time onstage running through the best of their discography, Sun Room picked things up at the end with the bouncy “Sol Del Sur” before throwing us into their “Cadillac” for the encore. The band’s warm vibes and welcoming energy sent the crowd into the chilly evening cocooned in the pleasant experience of the show as a whole- we can’t wait to see them back and this time, hopefully the sunshine will follow.
