Gallery: Death Cab for Cutie chases ‘Asphalt Meadows’ to Phoenix

Two crowds diverged in downtown Phoenix on Monday night- the bedazzled and fabulous headed to Carly Rae Jepsen and a horde of elder indie-leaning emos converged on The Van Buren for the return of Death Cab for Cutie.

Eschewing an opener for the Arizona date, the band went on promptly at showtime to a rapidly filling sold out room. It’s been a long while since DCFC has played a proper set in Phoenix and the roar from the room welcomed them back with open arms.

They played for two hours to an enraptured audience that pressed as close as possible to the stage to sing along to “The New Year” and the classic “I Will Follow You Into the Dark”. They’re also celebrating the release of their latest album, Asphalt Meadows- injecting plenty of stellar songs into the setlist. Whether the tracks were old favorites or new and slightly less familiar, the audience soaked up every second of the set.

There’s something special about experiencing these songs in a roomful of diehard fans and the band made the night memorable for everyone in attendance.
