Mahogany LOX is putting her own stamp on pop and R&B with her latest songs. The sister of Sky Blu and niece of Red Foo from LMFAO (along with granddaughter to Motown Records legend Berry Gordy), Mahogany has injected her own music with influences from her multi-talented family. Atlas spoke with Mahogany via email about her latest single, writing songs about love and confidence and her hopeful plans for the rest of this year!
You come from a very musical background and family. Did you always want to be in the music world, or did your interest manifest over time?
I’ve always wanted to entertain! I’ve been loving music for as long as I can remember. When I was very young, I would always sing in the kitchen with my mom or driving in the car with my dad, I would sing old school R&B. I was also heavily influenced by Motown & my brother 8ky 6lu and Uncle Redfoo when they created their group LMFAO.
How does your family history impact your music?
I feel my family has impacted my music in a very positive way. Motown was definitely a family company with great artists, songwriters, song structure & producers. LMFAO was a lot of fun and unique and created a new genre in music, Party Rock. I would love to leave an imprint on the world like my family did!
In a similar vein, what names come to mind when you’re thinking of your influences?
I have a lot of musical influences: LMFAO, J.LO, Smokey Robinson, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Y.G., Destiny’s Child and so many more!
When you got started in music, how did you go about finding and crafting your unique sound?
Practice! I’ve made so many songs and now I feel like I’ve found my groove!!
I have two sides to me when it comes to music, sweet & sassy. “Boom” and “Kiss Me Slow” were my sweet side and “Take Your Man” and “Sike” are my sassy side.
What’s the story behind your latest single?
My latest single is “Sike”. It’s a Confidence Anthem!!!
I wrote “Sike” for the person who sings it to sing it to themselves and feel confident.
I wanted to be able to help anyone that struggles with confidence and let them know it’s ok to feel emotions, but know they’re amazing and not to let any negative comments bring them down.
Are there any topics that you find yourself gravitating towards when you’re writing? Are there any that you’d love to explore in future songs?
One of my favorite topics in writing is love! I feel true love is so meaningful, universal and inspiring. I do have other topics for future songs. Stay tuned, they’re coming!
If you could put together your dream tour, who would be joining you on the road?
I would love to tour with LMFAO, that would be a DREAM come true for me and would be so much fun.
What do you hope that your fans take away from your music?
Confidence! I want LOXSmiths to not only feel confident singing my songs but also feel confident 24/7!
What’s coming up for you this year? (COVID-19 has made planning difficult, but where are you hoping things turn out for the rest of 2020?)
I’m very optimistic for 2020. I’m doing my part by staying inside and staying positive while in quarantine. We all have to do our part to win. I’m confident that the world will rebound greatly from this & once we do, I would love to hop on a tour, perform and release more music!
Is there anything else that you’d like people to know about you, or is there anything you wish you got to talk about more that you may not get asked?
Hmm, I love animals! They’re a huge passion in my life! I would love to be able to foster and help out more animals when I get the chance! We are currently waiting to be fosters for a kitten! Just waiting for the call!
