Show Review: The Technicolors ring in 2020 with Arizona homecoming show

Arizona partygoers had their pick of New Year’s Eve events this week, but The Rebel Lounge was the place to be. Local rockers The Technicolors rang in the new year alongside Wyves and Bob Hoag’s Percussion Explosion, toasting a new decade with balloons and champagne as the clock struck midnight.

Wyves warmed up the room, playing a set of older songs and debuting a new track as well. Attendees were still trickling in, but the small room felt full by the end of the band’s set. Wyves were entertaining and funny, raising their glasses to the audience and the holiday. The set was an event, getting the crowd jamming along more enthusiastically as they looked up from their drinks at the back of the bar.

Legendary Arizona producer and musician Bob Hoag was coaxed into this gig by Technicolors frontman Brennan Smiley and he made the most of his 30 minute set. Dressed to the nines in a tux and tie, Hoag queued up his instrumentals and went to work with tambourine and drums. The audience initially seemed confused by the vibe change, but Hoag’s obvious enjoyment at being onstage, combined with his tracks’ infectious beats, soon had everyone bobbing their heads and dancing along. His jam session ended with a surprise appearance by members of local group Fairy Bones joining Hoag on maracas and shakers to accompany his flashy tambourine work.

The Technicolors celebrated their Arizona homecoming with a set that shook the room. Smiley’s guitar riffs had everyone dancing, while guitarist Sean Silverman’s theatrics drew smiles from the front row. The band picked the perfect collection of songs to start 2020 off on the right notes, including the power move of kicking off their set with “I’ll Love You Someday”.

The band sprinted through the front half of the setlist, adding in “Congratulations, You’re a Doll”, “Sweat” and “Feels Like Trouble” in the race to midnight. As the venue reached the final countdown to 2020, the stage was showered in balloons and fans clinked cups of champagne that were passed out by the band. With the celebration really in full swing, The Technicolors returned to their set, closing things out with “Heavy Leather” and “Tonight You Are Mine”, before they took their spots as afterparty DJs into the early hours of the morning.
