According to Jack Black, it’s been over 15 years since Tenacious D visited Arizona. Judging from the size and ardor of the crowd, time is irrelevant when it comes to Black and his duo partner Kyle Gass. Backed by a stellar band to round out their sound, Tenacious D treated Phoenix to a full performance of their latest album, Post-Apocalypto- complete with raunchy animations and voiceovers.
The duo kicked off the evening with this album performance, playing each song behind a screen showing the crude animation of their latest wild concept record. The audience laughed right along with the band before they emerged from behind the curtain for “the greatest hits performance” portion of the night. Black and Gass are unapologetically irreverant, leaving no offensive subject untouched by their music and lyrics. Longtime fans raised lighters and beer for “Rize of the Fenix”, “Kickapoo” and “Dio”. Black and Gass even had a band-ending “fight” that segued perfectly into the reunion on “Dude (I Totally Miss You)”. They closed with a stellar cover of Cream’s “Sunshine of Your Love” and, of course, “Fuck Her Gently”.
